SUMMER TERM 2008

AT HAVEN

CHILDREN’S CENTRE

Family Learning and Development

A wide range of courses for adults are available including First Aid and NVQ’s in Business Admin and Children’s Care, Learning and Development.  Our joint workshops and courses provide opportunities for children and families to play and learn together.

Our employment support service includes regular visits from Job CentrePlus offering advice on training, vacancies and benefits.

Family and Parenting Support

Our family support service aims to provide the support that families themselves say they need.  Our outreach workers are available to work with families on an individual basis in their own homes or through groups to provide advice, support and guidance on a range of issues connected with being a parent, including behaviour management, child development and general parenting.  They can also put parents in touch with other organisations who provide support on more specific issues.

Our maternity services include a weekly drop-in Health Visitor clinic, baby group, baby massage and ‘Life with Baby’ Classes.

We aim for the additional services we offer to be responsive to local need, and regularly consult and evaluate them with our service users.

Further detailed information is available from Centre Staff on 01329 232095 / 01329 237227

Text Box: CHILDREN’S INFORMATION SERVICE

One area that we know parents are seeking information on is looking for child (or young teen!) care, interested? Please read on…..

Why might childcare be needed?
Parents/carers may be working, or training, or may need some time to themselves. Childcare also provides an opportunity for children to get used to changes in environment, play with different toys, games and activities, and socialise with others.
What types of childcare are available?
There are a number of different types of childcare available—childminders, nurseries, pre-schools, out of school care, holiday play schemes.
Is it just for the under 5s?
Services cater for children aged 0 - 14 with older children being provided for by Childminders, Out of School Care or Home Childcarers.
How do I find out what is available and what they are like?
From the Children’s Information Service (CIS) - helpline telephone 0845 602 1125 or visit their website www.hants.gov.uk/childcare for lots of childcare information. A visit to a selection of potential childcare providers is recommended.
The CIS also provide information on what you and your child can expect. If you contact the helpline they can send you the ‘Looking for Childcare?’ Sure start booklet which contains information about a range of childcare matters, and ‘More Choice for Childcare’ leaflet which lays out how childcare choices for children of all ages is changing and when.
